Route of Remembrance – digital learning platform for historical sites in the Aachen region
Case Study
Digital Learning Platform
Route of Remembrance for historical sites
The “Route der Erinnerung” (German for Route of Remembrance) is a digital learning platform connecting several historical sites across the Aachen city region (StädteRegion Aachen). Museums, archives, and initiatives dedicated to remembrance culture present their topics through multimedia formats, making regional history accessible to school classes and the interested public.
K3B implemented the project together with the film production company Zinnoberfilm. Our goal was to create a digital experience that makes historical places accessible online while meaningfully complementing visits on site. The content is designed to spark curiosity, provide orientation, and offer an approachable introduction to complex historical topics.
Digital formats for real places of remembrance
A key part of the collaboration was translating different learning locations into a shared digital format. The result is a series of digital learning experiences covering topics in regional history – including industrialization, the Nazi period, and the history of Aachen. This content is presented through various formats: virtual 360-degree tours, drone footage of the sites, short films, historical sources, and extensive photo collections. The platform also includes materials that teachers can use directly in the classroom.

Platform, design and technical implementation
K3B was responsible for the concept, design, and technical implementation of the platform. Our goal was to build a solution that is intuitive to use both in the classroom and on mobile devices. Since tablets and smartphones play an important role in school environments, the platform was designed with a strong mobile focus.
Technically, the site is based on a fast, server-side rendered web architecture with a lightweight content management system as its editorial backend. This allows content to be easily maintained and expanded over time.
The result is a website that brings together multiple learning resources and provides an accessible entry point to regional history. The digital content does not replace visits to the historical sites, but supports teachers and learners in preparing for visits, developing questions, or deepening their understanding afterward.
